Sustainability Day

Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group has been successful in attracting a small grant from the State Government to deliver a Sustainability Day in partnership with Warwick Central State School. The “Sustainability Day” will take place within the Warwick Central State School grounds on Tuesday, 5th June as part of the World Environment Day celebrations. The purpose of the day is to showcase local examples of people and businesses that are actively helping to protect our environment. A number of activities have already been confirmed. They include sessions on:
- solar energy (Amaroo Environmental Centre),
- native and exotic fish (Queensland Fisheries),
- Composting and worm farming (Envirocom).
- Tamworth pigs and Persian sheep (Belle Marriage - Karara)
- Juicing and smoothies using Organic produce (Percy’s fruit shop - Warwick)
- Construction of a native plant garden (Greening Australia)
- Caring for our native wildlife (Granite Belt Wildlife Carers and Warwick Wildlife Carer (Susan Needer)
- Making Jam using bush foods (Lorraine Welsh – Karara)
- Growing organic foods (Symara Organics – Dalveen)
How can you be involved?
We hope to supplement these activities by offering opportunities for the students, and in turn their families, to become more aware of local businesses and local produce. To do this we are seeking support from businesses and farmers who may wish to showcase their product by donating flyers or samples for sample bags. These environmentally friendly bags have been donated by our local Bi-Lo store. Suggestions include homemade or environmentally friendly cleaning products or fruit/vegetables/honey/eggs that the students can cook and share over morning tea and or lunch.
This project is all about raising awareness about what individuals can do to help their local environment and sharing knowledge about what produce is available locally is a key factor in supporting our local communities. If you think you could help, please contact Catherine Potter at the Landcare Office on 4661 9909.
